Aloe

There are about 400 species of the flowering succulents known as Aloe. Most Aloes have a rosette of large thick flesh leaves. The leaves are often lance-shaped with a sharp apex and a spiny margin. Aloe flowers are tubular and are usually densely clustered and yellow, orange or red that come from leafless stems. Many species of Aloe are stemless and grow directly at ground level. They vary in colour from grey to green and sometimes are striped or mottled.
